A delegation from the US arrived at NTTU's Center of Austronesian Culture on the afternoon of June 15, 2015. This delegation included representatives from the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), as well as Justin Harris, Program Manager, Office of International and Tribal Affairs, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); Noah Dubin, Special Assistant for International and Tribal Affairs, US EPA; Ryan Ward, Senior Program Associate, Center for Native American Youth and David M. Gipp, Chancellor, North Dakota United Tribes Technical College. This was one of several stops in a series of visits and discussions on indigenous community environmental and sustainable development issues in Taiwan and the US. A forum was held during which Futuru Tsai, Assistant Professor, Department of Public and Cultural Affairs, gave a talk on the current status and development of indigenous tribal groups in Taitung County. The US representatives shared their knowledge of the Native American experience of reviving and establishing cultural identity among the youth and traditional ecological knowledge and environmental conservation. Following the presentations, discussions continued in the areas of indigenous traditional knowledge systems and relationships with the land, indigenous youth cultural identity and pride and other efforts in the sustainable development of indigenous communities. This forum lasted for more than two hours, following which the group visited the Xinyuan Community in Taitung City to gain firsthand knowledge of the status and development efforts of an indigenous community in the Taitung area.
