College of Science and Engineerin

The College of Science and Engineering (CSE) was established on August 1, 2003, when NTTU transitioned from a teachers’ college to a full-fledged university. Presently, the CSE is comprised of five departments: the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Applied Science, the Department of Life Science, the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering and the Department of Information Science and Management Systems.

Based on this organizational structure, the CSE produces multidisciplinary research in science, information and natural resources. In line with the vision of NTTU, the CSE emphasizes not only outcomes-based teaching, but also the integration of theory and practice, as well as professional ethics

With respect to the global trends of the knowledge economy and sustainable development, we also take responsibility as the sole university in the Taitung area to continually foster systems of industry-academic cooperation.

To accomplish this mission, the CSE offers programs in applied mathematics and science to help professionals develop technical expertise, capabilities and knowledge such as designing and conducting experiments; and analyzing and interpreting data.

CSE emphasizes nature, humanity and engineering ethics to cultivate an awareness in students about modern-day issues and the impact of engineering technology on environment, society and globalization.

Giving Back to the Community

We know that the ultimate purpose of higher education is to enhance the progress of humanity. The CSE does its part by cooperating with local industries to help advance their research and development and production systems.

The CSE facilitates development of the eastern region of Taiwan by integrating theoretical and practical research with industries and academic institutions, including:

  1. Fostering industry-academic cooperation through the “Green Science Exposition” which showcases how CSE’s research projects can enhance sustainable technological development.
  2. Fostering industry-academic cooperation through the establishment of the Center for Deep Ocean Water (DOW) Technology Research and Development.
  3. Advancing non-toxic, green, and organic farming technologies through cooperative research projects between the department of Life Science and local farm communities.
  4. Establishing the Taitung area e-commerce system via the Department of Information Science and Management Systems.
  5. Establishing the Taitung area natural disaster prevention technology and information system with CSE’s own Center for Natural Disaster Prevention and Information.

In the short-term, the CSE will solidify its teaching and research capabilities by reorganizing its departmental structure and attracting excellent faculty from all over Taiwan and beyond. In addition, the CSE will not only establish a cooperative groundwork with industries, but also participate actively in the research work of regional disaster precaution and sustainable development.

During the long-term development phase, the CSE will participate in the promotion of NTTU to an internationally recognized “green university”. The CSE will also set up integrated institutes to further research in the fields of life science, ecology, natural resources, sustainable systems, disaster precaution technology, environmental economics information management, ergonomic health information, and photoelectric and communication engineering. The CSE will endeavor to become a cradle of professionals in the field of sustainable development.

Dean of the College:A message from the Dean
