College of Humanities

The College of Humanities is most famous for its two unique graduate institutes in Taiwan, the Graduate Institute of Austronesian Studies and Graduate Institute of Children’s Literature. Currently, the College of Humanities is actively engaged in developing three additional academic units, the Children’s Culture Study Center, the Art Performance Center, and the Eastern Taiwan & Pacific Research Center.

The spirit of humanity is the principle of the college. Cultivation of essential competencies, ethical commitment, and initiative to find answers to the challenging questions all societies face have long been the core elements driving the development of the College of Humanities. The College of Humanities is most famous for its two unique graduate institutes in Taiwan, the Graduate Institute of Austronesian Studies and Graduate Institute of Children’s Literature. Currently, the College of Humanities is actively engaged in developing three additional academic units, the Children’s Culture Study Center, the Art Performance Center, and the Eastern Taiwan & Pacific Research Center. Together, these institutions will provide the breadth and depth of a robust education in the humanities.

As a community of students and scholars, NTTU’s College of Humanities seeks to advance discovery, inquiry, creativity and innovation—preparing our students to be informed, engaged, and effective global citizens. To meet this vision, the educational objectives of the College of Humanities are:

  • Enhancing the spirit of cultural appreciation through interdisciplinary integration- We aim to create a Renaissance in education by integrating humanities, art, human geography and cultural anthropology.
  • Reviving academic discourse- Our series of guest lectures, “Scholars at the University” invites acclaimed authors, artists and academics to speak about their insights and inspirations, adding the human touch by making research and education a more social event.

Merging local and global communities-In our curriculum planning we maintain Taiwan’s connection to its rich Austronesian cultural heritage and cultivate macroscopic and microcosmic views of society in order to foster the balance of modernity with time-honored traditions.

  • Continue to expand the breadth and depth of learning experiences through expansion of the “Scholar in the University” series of lectures.
  • Increasing our contributions to the arts by emphasizing Austronesian culture, regional culture, children’s culture and the performing arts.
  • Establishing a digital research platform to research e-learning, digital teaching and the development of a digital humanities curriculum.
  • Establishing applied programs of study, such as Applied English, Picture Book Illustration Arts, Music Appreciation, 3D Animation, Austronesian and Museum Cultural Studies, Public Policy and Affairs, Classical Liberal Readings, and more.
  • Providing community service to the Taitung/Zhiben area by increasing humanities and arts activities.
  • Creating a cultural atmosphere in the new Zhiben Campus through the promotion of regional traditions and cooperation with local establishments.
